The iPhone 16 Pro Max is Apple’s most expensive smartphone in Malaysia, starting at RM 6,999 for the 256GB model. With a titanium frame, A18 Pro chip, and improved camera system, it promises the best iPhone experience yet. But at nearly RM 7,000, many buyers wonder if it justifies the cost compared to previous iPhones or Android rivals. This review examines every aspect of the iPhone 16 Pro Max to help you decide.
We tested the device for two weeks in Kuala Lumpur, using it with CelcomDigi and Maxis 5G networks. We also compared it to the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. Below, we break down the design, display, performance, camera, battery life, and overall value.
Design and Build Quality
The iPhone 16 Pro Max retains the same flat-edge design introduced with the iPhone 12, but with refinements. The frame is now Grade 5 titanium (same as the iPhone 15 Pro Max) with a new “blasted” finish that resists fingerprints better. The back is textured matte glass available in four colors: Natural Titanium, Desert Titanium, White Titanium, and Black Titanium.
Dimensions are 163.0 x 77.6 x 8.25 mm, and weight is 227g — slightly heavier than the 221g iPhone 15 Pro Max. The extra weight is due to a larger battery. IP68 water and dust resistance remains, rated for up to 6 meters for 30 minutes.
One notable change is the repositioned camera bump: the three lenses are now arranged in a slightly different pattern, but the overall bump protrudes about the same. The Action Button from the iPhone 15 Pro series is still present, and the new “Capture Button” on the right side provides quick access to the camera.

- SIM ejector tool

Display: 6.9-inch OLED with ProMotion
The iPhone 16 Pro Max features a 6.9-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED display with ProMotion 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. This is the largest display ever on an iPhone. Resolution is 2868 x 1320 pixels, resulting in a pixel density of 460 ppi. Peak brightness is 2000 nits outdoors and 1600 nits for HDR content (typical 1000 nits).
The bezels are thinner than the iPhone 15 Pro Max — Apple claims 1.15mm on all sides. The Dynamic Island remains unchanged. In direct sunlight in KL, the display is very readable, and the 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling smooth.
Always-On Display is supported, showing time, widgets, and notifications at 1Hz refresh rate. This feature uses minimal battery.
Performance: A18 Pro Chip
The A18 Pro chip is built on a 3nm process (N3E) and features a 6-core CPU (2 performance + 4 efficiency) and a 6-core GPU. Apple claims the CPU is 15% faster and the GPU 20% faster than the A17 Pro in the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The Neural Engine has 16 cores and is 35% faster for machine learning tasks.
In Geekbench 6, the iPhone 16 Pro Max scored 3,450 single-core and 8,900 multi-core — the highest scores ever on a smartphone. GPU benchmarks in 3DMark Wild Life Extreme show 30% improvement over the A17 Pro.
Real-world performance is buttery smooth. Apps open instantly, multitasking is seamless, and games like Genshin Impact run at 60 fps with max settings. The device does not overheat significantly, thanks to a new thermal management system with a graphite sheet and a copper heat pipe.
RAM is 8GB (up from 6GB in the iPhone 15 Pro Max), which helps with keeping more apps in memory.
Camera System
The iPhone 16 Pro Max has a triple-camera system: 48MP main (f/1.78), 48MP ultra-wide (f/2.2, 120° field of view), and 12MP telephoto (f/2.8, 5x optical zoom). The main sensor is 1/1.28-inch with second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization. The ultra-wide is a new 48MP sensor with autofocus, enabling macro photography.
Apple introduced “Fusion” processing that combines data from all three sensors to improve detail and dynamic range. Photos taken in good light are sharp with natural colors. Low-light performance is improved by 30% over the iPhone 15 Pro Max, according to Apple.
Video recording remains best-in-class: up to 4K HDR at 60 fps with Dolby Vision, and new “Action Mode” for smooth stabilization. The telephoto lens now has 5x optical zoom (up from 3x), matching the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s optical zoom capability.
For selfies, the 12MP TrueDepth camera supports autofocus and can record 4K HDR video at 60 fps.
Camera Sample Observations
- Daylight shots: excellent detail, accurate colors, no oversharpening.
- Portrait mode: improved edge detection with the new 48MP sensor.
- Night mode: brighter and less noise than iPhone 15 Pro Max.
- Video: stabilization is superb; 4K 60 fps with Dolby Vision looks professional.
Battery Life and Charging
The iPhone 16 Pro Max has a 4,676 mAh battery, up from 4,422 mAh in the 15 Pro Max. In our test (mixed usage with 5G, social media, camera, and video streaming), the device lasted 14 hours and 20 minutes — about 2 hours longer than the 15 Pro Max.
Charging speed remains at 27W via USB-C (20W with Apple’s 20W adapter). Wireless charging supports MagSafe up to 25W with a 30W adapter. The phone supports Qi2 wireless charging up to 15W.
From 0% to 50% takes about 30 minutes with a 30W charger. Full charge takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. This is slower than many Android flagships that offer 65W+ charging, but battery life is excellent.
iOS 18 and Software Features
The iPhone 16 Pro Max ships with iOS 18, which brings customizable home screen icons, a redesigned Control Center, and new privacy features like app locking. Apple Intelligence (AI features) is coming in a later update, but at launch, the phone does not include on-device AI like Samsung’s Galaxy AI.
Other software highlights: Satellite SOS, Crash Detection, and eSIM support (no physical SIM in Malaysia).
Pricing in Malaysia and Value
The iPhone 16 Pro Max is available at Apple Store Online Malaysia, authorized resellers like Machines, Switch, and Digi/CelcomMaxis. Prices:
- 256GB: RM 6,999
- 512GB: RM 7,999
- 1TB: RM 8,999
Compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max launch price of RM 6,499 (256GB), the 16 Pro Max is RM 500 more expensive. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (512GB) launched at RM 6,299 and now retails around RM 5,500.
Is it worth the price? If you need the best camera, longest battery life, and latest performance, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is the best iPhone. But for most users, the iPhone 15 Pro Max offers 90% of the experience for RM 1,000 less. Alternatively, the best budget phones 2025 provide great value under RM 2,000.

Final Verdict
The iPhone 16 Pro Max is the most capable iPhone ever, but its high price limits its appeal to enthusiasts and professionals. If you upgrade every year or need the absolute best, it’s a worthy investment. If you’re on a tighter budget, consider the iPhone 16 Pro or the iPhone 15 Pro Max. For Android users, the Galaxy S24 Ultra or Pixel 9 Pro offer comparable experiences at lower prices.
In Malaysia, where the average monthly salary is around RM 3,500, spending RM 7,000 on a phone is a significant decision. We recommend evaluating your needs and considering alternatives before committing.
